Kidnap [2017] ★★

Halle Berry plays a mother who would stop at nothing to recover her kidnapped son in this generic action thriller that recycles ever cliché in the Hollywood handbook. That’s not to say that the movie doesn’t have its moments, especially early on. Berry is truly likable and you’ll probably end up rooting for her, every step of the way. The problem is in the execution; director Luis Prieto relies too much on car chase scenes. It’s fun at first, watching Berry set off in pursuit of the kidnappers. But the formula wears off quickly and the movie rarely stops to take a deep breath. And as a result, so do we! I suspect this guilty pleasure would go down easy if you have nothing else to watch on a Saturday night. Just don’t expect something original or memorable.
