It’s not “Into Darkness” or the classic “The Wrath of Khan”, but producer J.J Abrams and his collaborators have managed to pull off the impossible by delivering yet another spectacular entry in the Star Trek franchise. “Beyond” , once again starring Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto (who both continue to impress) as well as Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg and Anton Yelchin (who tragically passed away last month at 27), is lively, well made and true to the originals. When the USS enterprise is destroyed by a mysterious entity, Captain Kirk and his crew find themselves stranded on an unknown planet, where they must face an alien race, lead by the ruthless Krall. Krall, played by a superior Idris Elba, makes a worthy adversary for Kirk and his enterprise crew. Director Justin Lin (who directed 4 Fast and Furious movies) knows exactly how to keep the action going. This means that there’s never a dull moment in “Star Trek: Beyond”, which is everything you could ask for in a summer blockbuster. Criticisms? Shortcomings? They don’t matter in the Star Trek universe. All I know is that I had a blast watching this new entry, and after 9 movies and endless TV episodes, Captain Kirk and Spock have never been better. I can rest easy knowing that these characters will return in future adventures. May they live long and prosper.
