“Welcome to Me” offers Kristen Wiig a juicy role (think less “Bridesmaids” and more “The Skeleton Twins”) and she delivers. What’s more, she is surrounded by a talented cast that brings out the colors in Eliot Laurence’s funny, often dramatic screenplay. With all these good ingredients involved, it’s a shame that the movie left me with a bad taste in my mouth. Wiig plays a woman who suffers from borderline personality disorder. One day she buys a lottery ticket and wins 83 million dollars. Crazy huh? Instead of celebrating, she decides to quit her meds and buy her own talk show. Oh and did I mention that she is obsessed with Oprah? What seemed like a perfect plan soon turns into a disaster. Which is why it’s only natural to bring the story to a climax. But “Welcome to Me” doesn’t do that. Instead, we have to go through more self destructive behavior and embarrassment. Amidst all this chaos, Wiig manages to stay solid. Unfortunately, it doesn’t serve the audience nearly as well. We have to suffer with her and the reward isn’t as great as it ought to be.
