Stylishly made but painfully boring drama about a 1970’s marriage gone bad. Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt play husband and wife and it’s a nasty sight. Vacationing in a beautiful place in Europe, Jolie barely says a word. She’s depressed and we have to suffer with her for an agonizing 130 minutes. Written and directed by Jolie herself, “By The Sea” desperately wants to take flight like a vintage European art movie, but it lands with a resounding thud. The alleged big “reveal” at the end has been telegraphed so far in advance even the actors look bored breathless having to act the damn thing out. The beautiful locations earn an extra half star. The rest is literally a mess from start to finish. You’ve been warned.
