poster-runner-runner1 It takes a certain misdirection to make the talent of a good cast (Ben Affleck, Justin Timberlake and Gemma Arterton) disappear right before your eyes. “Runner Runner”, clumsily directed by Brad Furman (“The Lincoln Lawyer“) from a lousy script by Brian Koppelman and David Levien does exactly that. So what’s it about? That’s hard to say. The two credited screenwriters might disagree but I don’t even know if they worked together on this silly script. The movie opens with Timberlake trying to pay his way through college with online gambling. Later on he travels to Costa Rica to confront the man (a miscast Ben Affleck who should stick to directing) behind the online poker site that cheated him. If you can’t figure out what happens next, you’ve probably dozed off, a fair response to a movie that gets worse as it goes along. The actors work hard but their characters are sketchily drawn and it’s a crime to waste their talent on such nonsense. Just like Timberlake’s character, I left this movie feeling cheated.

    Shit I had extremely high hopes. The trailer seemed so cool and I have been waiting so long.

    PS. Did you put on your shades when you were typing “I left this movie feeling cheated?”

    I just watched this today because I already watched all the decent movies out. Deserves the 1.5 to be honest. I mean Justin Timberlake wasn’t so bad but Ben Affleck was horrible. Kick ass criminal who is untouchable by the FBI but looks like a complete pussy even while feeding men to crocodiles. He looked asleep half the film. The story had potential as well, but the role given to Affleck was stupid. Again, kick ass criminal who is untouchable by the FBI but is completely clueless that JT was working behind his back and plotting something. Imagine B. Affleck as Batman. In order to make him look tough enough they’d need to bring Harry Styles to play the Joker. Wish he sticks to movies that suit him.

      I think part of the problem was the script aswell. But yes Affleck was completely clueless and he basically sleepwalked through the whole thing. Damn shame.
