The Conjuring 2 [2016] ★★★½

conjuringpostersmall“The Conjuring 2” is that rare example of a horror sequel that surpasses the original. The first one scared the living hell out of me. Part 2 is 20 minutes longer, so you get an extra dose of scares. And boy does it work. So kudos to director James Wan for pulling it off once again. By breathing fresh life into the haunted-house genre, Wan has managed to orchestrate some of the scariest scenes I’ve ever seen in a horror movie. Kudos, also, to Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga, who couldn’t be more credible as paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren. In the first movie, they helped a family survive the dark presence in their farmhouse. In the sequel, we move to London, where a single mom and her four kids find their home haunted by a malicious spirit. That’s cue for Lorraine and her husband to intervene, with deliciously creepy consequences. Props to the cast for going beyond the call of routine horror movie. Madison Wolfe is a standout as young Janet, bringing emotional nuance to her role even as director James Wan bombards her with everything from evil spirits to soul crushing nightmares. Even as it reaches the 2 hour mark, “The Conjuring 2” keeps springing scary surprises. And it’s wicked, irresistible fun to watch the whole thing as you scream your head off.  It’s easily one of the best horror sequels ever made.

  1. Thank you for appreciating a damn good horror film. I personally really liked it a lot and I saw it twice in theaters. Regardless if I liked the first one a bit more due to pacing issues, it’s amazing to see James Wan step up his game with every movie he makes. Cannot wait to see Aquaman and his upcoming projects.
