The Hunger Games: Mockingjay- Part 2 [2015] ★★½

mockingjayIn dutifully completing the Hunger Games series, director Francis Lawrence has sadly saved the weakest for last. I’ve been a huge fan of the series, so you can understand why I expected more from this final chapter. For starters, there’s surprisingly less action here. Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence, still as good a ever), Peeta and the rest of the gang spend most of their time talking and talking. The war of Panem is escalating, so they must bring together an army against President Snow and end his reign of terror once and for all. Just when yawning sets in and you think that Snow will never show up, scene stealing Donal Sutherland rides in. It’s also good to see the late Philip Seymour Hoffman one last time as Plutarch Heavensbee, and the blowout climax is excitingly staged. It’s just that waiting for the good stuff can be a real mood-killer. And ultimately, that’s my problem with “Mockingjay part 2”. The Hunger Games franchise will always have a place in movie history. Too bad the final chapter felt like a footnote and, for me, was easy to forget.
