After years of making terrible misfires (“Lady in the Water”, “The Happening”, “After Earth” and oh God “The Last Airbender”), it’s so good to finally see the real M. Night Shyamalan back. Well…kind of. His latest effort, “The Visit”, is far from being an original, but it knows how to creep you out. Combining the tale of Hansel and Gretel and the found footage gimmick, Shyamalan tells the story of a mom (Kathryn Hahn) who sends her two kids (Olivia DeJonge and Ed Oxenbould), to visit her estranged parents. All goes well until Grandma (Deanna Dunagan, creepy as hell) gets naked in the middle of the night and starts making weird noises outside their room. What the hell is going on? I’ll say no more, except to say that despite some cheap thrills, “The Visit” is a hell of a good time. Will it be enough to save Shyamalan’s career? I’m not really sure. But it’s definitely a step forward.
