Want to see Jason Statham kicking some giant shark ass? “The Meg” is clearly the movie for you, a mix of B-movie material coupled with spectacular special effects (and they look glorious in IMAX 3D). As a sucker for shark movies, I had a blast watching it. Statham doesn’t even have to say a word, and you’d still watch him trying to save an undersea crew from a giant threat: a prehistoric shark known as the Megalodon. Megalowhat? It doesn’t matter. It’s a big dumb idea, and as long as you don’t take it seriously, you’ll enjoy it for what it is. The material shows its age (in fact, this could have easily been a 90’s film), but Statham and director Jon Turteltaub keep the action going, and that’s what matters the most here. You’re not here for quotable dialogue, or unforgettable characters. “The Meg” promises a big shark and some spectacular action scenes, and delivers. What more can you ask for?
