“We always knew they’d be back” they said. And I always knew it would suck. Let’s face it: what clicked in the mid 1990’s clearly doesn’t anymore. Following the first movie’s huge success (and believe me, it was), director Roland Emmerich went on to direct several “end of times” blockbusters, from “The Day After Tomorrow” to “2012”. Needless to say, this genre of films has been done and redone so many times (remember last year’s “San Andreas? Nobody does) and it’s far from being as appealing as it used to be anymore. I’m drifting. But so does the movie. From the thin plot to the cheesy dialogue, “Resurgence” is everything I hate about a sequel. Emmerich picks up the story 20 years after the events of the first one, where earth is threatened by yet another alien invasion. Since Will Smith is a no-show this time around, it’s up to his son (Jessie T. Usher), Liam Hemsworth (dreadful as always) and Jeff Goldblum (still the best thing about this movie) to step up and save the world. The rest is all sound and fury signifying absolutely nothing. Go ahead, have your senses senselessly pounded for 2 hours. If you want to see stuff being destroyed for no purpose or logic, be my guest. Personally, I refuse to believe that this is the best they could come up with. I saw the movie in 3D and can report that the visual impact is pretty potent. I just wish what was happening onscreen wasn’t so dreary. They waited 20 years to release this. It wasn’t worth the wait.

ID Resurgence is a soul crushing film that you want to like it, but when you leave and think about it, you start to hate it. I personally couldn’t stand it. Saw a fan screening on Tuesday, and if it wasn’t for Jeff Goldblum, I would’ve walked out of the film. It makes me mad especially as a fan of the original!
