Now You See Me [2013] ★★

now-you-see-me-poster2Ain’t that a kick in the head: “Now You See Me” has the coolest cast in town and a solid premise yet halfway through the film my mind started to wander. Instead of being pulled into the story I felt myself drifting away from it. The movie starts out promisingly enough though. In a companion piece to “Ocean’s Eleven” and heist movies alike, Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Dave Franco and Isla Fisher take the stage as The Four Horsemen, magicians who can rob a bank in front of a Vegas audience and let the money rain down on them. Told you it had potential. Then enter Mark Ruffalo, an F.B.I agent who is assigned to bring them down. Along the way there are chases, tricks, more heists and a final twist. Director Louis Leterrier (“Clash of the Titans”, “The Incredible Hulk”) doesn’t know when to quit. And that’s part of the problem. So the result, for me, is a muddle.  I admire Leterrier’s ambition, but I don’t think it’s necessary to jump through endless hoops to tell a good story, or to digest one. I’m more into “less is more” when it comes to heist/caper films but Leterrier and co apparently believe that more is better. Even at the screening I attended, I heard people say it was pretty good, so I know my opinion won’t be shared by everyone.  Personally, I won’t remember “Now You See Me” a few weeks from now, but the top cast definitely made the whole thing go down easy.

  1. Totally agree with your review.
I was expecting a mindblowing movie about magic that could compete with The Illusionist and The Prestige… I surely didn’t get it. PLUS I hated the ending of the movie, the beginning was much more promising.
