What’s Your Number? [2011] ★★½

Start hating me now, but despite its silly and cheesy premise, there’s something likable about this romantic comedy, starring Anna Faris and Chris “Captain America” Evans (yep that’s his nickname now). If you’re in the mood for mindless entertainment, look no further. Personally, I had no expectations whatsoever, so imagine my surprise to find this R-rated chick flick entertaining and fun to watch. Here’s the premise:  In America, the average woman has 10.5 lovers in her lifetime. And 96% of women who’ve been with 20 or more lovers can’t find a husband, this according to a magazine survey done by one Dr. Helen Fig. So the film’s heroine, played by Faris, discovers that she’s one of those who have slept with more men than the national average. Her solution? Look up all her exes and see if any of them is worth reconnecting with. Her unlikely partner is the guy in the apartment across the hall (Evans) who’s desperately trying to avoid a relationship while she’s trying to find “the right guy.” Okay, so you probably know how this is going to play out (unless you’ve never seen a chick flick before), but the getting there is what makes “What’s Your Number?” go down easy. It would be unfair and inaccurate to call it a one joke movie. There are many laughs along the way, and the cast seems to be having a great time. That’s always a good thing. I think the only thing I’m allowed to criticize is the sheer formulaic nature of everything. There are no surprises here; but then again if surprises is what you’re looking for, then you shouldn’t be watching this movie in the first place. No?
