“Last Night” deals with a subject that has been recycled countless of times: how easy it is to give in to temptation, and how thin the line is between “to betray or not to betray”. Here we find a married couple, Joanna and Michael (Keira Knightley and Sam Worthington) who flirt with the idea of cheating. They are moving along their lives together until Joanna meets Laura (Eva Mendes), Michael’s attractive colleague whom he never mentioned. While Michael is away with Laura on a business trip, Joanna runs into an old but never forgotten love, Alex (Guillaume Canet) and agrees to have a drink with him. As the night progresses, temptation increases for the couple, as each must make a decision that will affect the future of their marriage. So basically, this is a film about making choices. Nothing new indeed, and nothing rewarding at all. No doubt the movie sounds intriguing and seductive at first, but I found myself losing interest in the story and its characters much too early. There is sufficient plot and character development to fill out a 30 minute short. Unfortunately, “Last Night” runs 90 minutes. You get the idea. The actors give it their best, but it’s not enough. Given that the movie features such a talented cast, one would expect something more “memorable”. Too bad the material isn’t as good as they are. Fans of the stars should take a look, but this one ranks as a major disappointment.
