Can I tell you how surprised I am that I actually enjoyed this movie? To be honest, I expected this sequel to be as lame as the 1982 movie. But boy was I wrong. It may not have been the best movie of 2010, but I have no problem admitting that it was one hell of a ride. More good news is that Jeff Bridges is back in style as both Kevin Flynn and his ageless computer program, Clu. The story picks up 7 years after the first movie. We learn that Flynn has a son now, Sam, who wants nothing more than to be able to visit the Grid with his dad. His dream goes down the drain when Flynn suddenly disappears. Fast forward 20 years, Sam decides that it’s finally time to look into his father’s disappearance at the old arcade and finds himself pulled into the same world of fierced programs and deadly games where his father has been living for the past 20 years. Together, they embark on a journey of survival, where they must defeat evil program Clu and his deadly army before it’s too late. Visually, “Tron” is a treat; I guess the problem with the original film is that it hasn’t aged well. The effects look pretty weak compared to today’s technology. Both films, made so many years apart, can easily be distinguished from one another. This time around, the use of 3D worked for the benefit of the film; since so much of the action involves quick movement in shots, 3D effects work like magic. The artifical world is beautifully crafted, bringing the visual experience to a whole new level. I’ve never seen anything like it before, and I must admit: I was instantly hooked. Sure the story has its plotholes, and one cannot fully understand the whole concept of that virtual world, but when the visual experience is so damn good, why should you complain?
