I’m not exactly the biggest Narnia fan out there, but I did enjoy the first two films. I guess the problem with those movies is that people will always try to compare them with the Harry Potter films. I beg to differ. Narnia and Hogwarts are two different worlds, and the sooner you realise that, the more you’ll enjoy this latest installment of the Narnia series. Lucy and Edmund are now in their mid-teens, and they find themselves returing to Narnia with their cousin Eustace (who’s very annoying at first) where they meet up with Prince Caspian and his crew aboard the royal ship “The Dawn Treader”. They are quickly briefed on the situation: Narnia is once again threatened by evil forces. There’s also the issue of the 7 missing magical swords which were given to Narnia by Aslan (voiced by a wonderful Liam Neeson), and must be brought together to break a spell that imprisons the lords and the innocent people of this magical world. Along the way, they encounter dragons, dwarves and a sea monster, before reaching the edge of the world where the final battle will take place. This third (and hopefully not last) chapter of this beloved series will definitely appeal more to younger kids, but I think it has what it takes to satisfy an older audience aswell; it’s a charming film, filled with magic, swords and mystical creatures. If this isn’t escapism and exactly what we need nowadays, then I don’t know what it is.
