For viewers who haven’t seen “Hatchet 1”, the movie demands a “what is it?” question. For those who have, it’s a “Why is it?” question. The movie picks up right at the end of the first one with Marybeth (who wasn’t even the heroine in the first film) escaping the swamp. She manages to reach Reverend Zombie (Tony Todd) who informs her that her father, uncle and another man were the ones who originally murdered Victor Crowley (Kane Hooper), the maniac who just killed all her friends in the swamp. To help Marybeth and also serve his own agenda, Zombie recruits a hardened pack of hunters to head back into the swamp and seek revenge on Victor Crowley (how clever!). Confession: I’m a guy who doesn’t mind a brainless slasher film every now and then, as long as it’s fun. But I guess the problem with “Hatchet II” is that it spends too much time trying to develop the story that we barely get to see some action. Big mistake. What’s more, the film suffers from the same kind of silliness that plagued most of the “Friday The 13th” series (I hope it doesn’t take 12 films to conclude the “Hatchet” series aswell). But still, horror fans might have a few guilty pleasure giggles with this slow, but knowing homage to 80’s slasher films. Others, why bother?
