“The Company Men” stars Ben Affleck, Tommy Lee Jones, and Chris Cooper as employees at GTX, a fictional Boston manufacturing company. These characters don’t have much interaction on screen, but they share one thing in common: they’ve all lost their jobs. The film examines the relationship between themselves, their families, neighbors and community as they struggle to get back on their feet. Bobby (Affleck in excellent form) has to beg jobs from his wife’s brother (Kevin Costner), who works as a building contractor, while Phil (Cooper) is advised to dye his hair and take anything off his résumé that suggests he had a career before 1990. The company CEO isn’t losing any sleep because of that. You might not give a crap about those men at first (Affleck’s character sounds a bit arrogant with his fancy house, porshe and golf club membership), but first time director John Wells has some surprises up his sleeves, making damn sure you go through hell and back with those jobless men in suit. I watched “The Company Men” not knowing what to expect from it, but I’m happy to say that I was pleasantly surprised; it’s a well acted drama that adds a twist to a familiar story (remember “Up In The Air”?) with likable characters, clever writing, and an interesting touch of dark humour aswell. Definitely worth a watch.
