It’s hard to describe “The Dilemma” because even “it” doesn’t know what it wants to be. Is it a comedy? Is it a tragedy? It’s hard to know. Sure the comedy scenes are present: Vince Vaughn gives a hilarious speech, Kevin James does his fat man dance, and Channing Tatum plays a tattooed guy with serious emotional problems. But at the same time, it’s a dark, serious relationship movie that poses a moral dilemma for Vaughn’s character and for the audience aswell. Would you tell your best friend and business partner that his wife is cheating on him? The “Dilemma” provides two options: either you tell him and suffer the consequences , or keep your mouth shut and feel guilty about it. Rather than a few rounds of funny scenes with Vaughn trying to do the right thing, we get serious emotional moments of a guy who doesn’t know what the best solution is. I usually don’t mind a mix of comedy and drama, as long as it stays fun to watch, and “The Dilemma” does offer a few funny moments, but it falls flat on the drama side, and there’s no reason on earth for it to take up almost two hours! As for Kevin James and Vince Vaughn, they make an ok duo, but you’d expect more with legendary director Ron Howard on board (why get himself mixed up with this in the first place?).
