To say that this reboot doesn’t have any reason to exist would be the understatement of the year. The 70’s TV show wasn’t great by any means, but it had its charm. The 2000 film version starring Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz and Lucy Liu had some good moments here and there, but it’s no classic either (and let’s not mention that horrible sequel). So why are we getting a reboot, almost 20 years later? Judging from the US box office numbers, people didn’t flock to see it, and understandably so. Despite a few solid action scenes, this film is as generic as they come. Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott and Ella Balinska are the new angels, and they’re about to go on a mission around the globe to save the world from a dangerous new technology. You know the drill. I had a few laughs along the way, and I especially enjoyed seeing Patrick Stewart here. Still, the result comes off as curiously flat. I don’t know if it’s the fact that we’ve seen it all before, but I don’t think this film has enough original ideas to justify its existence. It’s still entirely watchable, but it’s also just as easily forgettable.
