To say that I’ve been waiting for this “sequel” for over a decade would be an understatement. I grew up watching the original 1984 Karate Kid movie and I have always wondered whatever happened to Johnny Lawrence following his defeat in the All Valley Karate tournament. That’s the kind of impact this movie and its characters had on me as a teenager. Well now we have an answer, and if you’re not familiar with “Cobrai Kai” just yet, now’s the right time to start watching. This Youtube original series is everything a Karate Kid fan would ask from a continuation. This isn’t a spin-off, or a gimmick, or a spoof. This is the real deal, and as a long time fan, I was pleasantly surprised with the result. Set 34 years after the events of the first film (do we even need to talk about the other sequels?), the series focuses on Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka, yet again), who has fallen on hard times after high school. But all of this is about to change when he decides to reopen Cobrai Kai, the karate dojo that started it all back in the 80’s. Meanwhile, Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) is living the good life, that is until he finds out that his old rival Johnny is back at it again. That’s “Cobra Kai” in a nutshell, and after binge-watching the first season, I’m more than ready for another round. Kudos to the writers for crafting the best version of “Cobrai Kai” anyone could have asked for. It wasn’t going to be easy after all these years, but they miraculously managed to pull-it off. If you’re a Karate Kid fan, this series will make you jump for joy. It gets everything right from the word go, and ends with a terrific cliffhanger that will most definitely make you look forward to the next season.
