I wanted to like this movie. I really did. And on the surface, “The Mountain Between Us” has all the right ingredients to make it a winner: two charismatic stars and an intriguing plot. Kate Winslet and Idris Elba are two strangers who find themselves struggling to survive when their plane crash-lands on a mountain with no one around to save them. Intrigued? I was. Elba fully embodies the part of a doctor with a mysterious past, and you couldn’t ask for anyone better than Winslet to carry this story through. But the narrative becomes cheesy and way too conventional, which is not what I expected from a survival story. The pace slows as the story progresses and plays out its soap-opera plot, before it reaches a preposterous climax. I can’t say more without risking spoilers. But I can tell you straight away that both actors deserve better. It’s clear that everyone approached this film with good intentions, which makes the overall result even more disappointing.
