It’s the end of the summer, a time where some studios start preparing for Oscar season, while others dump their summer leftovers. Case in point: “Flatliners”, a truly awful thriller (if we can call it that), that ranks among the worst films of the year. A remake of a 1990 movie directed by Joel Schumacher, “Flatliners” manages to scrape the bottom of the barrel, stranding a good cast that includes Ellen Page and Diego Luna. Page seems clueless from the word go, playing a medical student who comes up with a genius idea one night: to stop her heart for a short period of time in order to trigger a near death experience. Why? You’ll have to see for yourself. I admit: I was intrigued at first, but now that I’ve seen this garbage, I warn you not to fall for the flashy marketing. The plot goes from dumb to dumber as we move along, relying way too much on “dream” sequences that lead nowhere. The last third of the film, where “the explanations” come, degenerates into a preposterous redemption story, validating the fact that this could well be the stupidest thriller you’ll see this year. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.
