CHIPS [2017] ★★½

You don’t walk in to see a buddy cop movie starring Dax Shepard and Michael Peña with high expectations. Personally, I don’t ask a lot from a raunchy comedy: I want it to entertain me and “CHIPS” does exactly that. The ultimate joke of the movie is that two officers from different backgrounds team up to bring down some dirty cops. Peña has a lot of experience, while Shepard is a rookie fresh out of the Academy who also happens to be a former motocross champ (the scars on his body are proof of that). Think of it as a mix between “Starsky and Hutch” and “The Odd Couple”, except it’s raunchier and features some exciting car-chase scenes, staged with skill by Shepard himself, who also wrote and directed the film. This is formulaic storytelling, to be sure, but all the actors seem to be having a good time and the action scenes will definitely satisfy fans of the genre. “CHIPS” doesn’t break any new ground, but it delivers on its promise, even if the gags fall flat at times. Call me a sucker for silly comedies, but I had a good time watching this movie.
