From the trailer and the poster you’d expect an animated picture filled with music and colorful characters. And “Sing” is exactly that, with music ranging from Frank Sinatra to modern, popular songs that kids and their parents will most certainly recognize. While the finished product is likable and enjoyable, it’s also hectic at times and doesn’t know when to quit. That shouldn’t bother audiences looking for a good time at the movies, so I won’t dwell on that. The story focuses on a koala named Buster Moon (Matthew McConaughey), who is about to lose his theater unless he can come up with the money on time. His plan? To stage a talent contest and make money out of it. Sounds pretty straightforward? And it is, with amusing characters singing their hearts out along the way. To be fair, there are plenty of funny moments here and just the right amount of music to make you want to sing and dance. Add to that a group of talented voice actors that includes Reese Witherspoon, Seth MacFarlane, Scarlett Johansson and John C. Reilly, and you get a recipe for fun. “Sing” may not be the most original animated movie you will ever see, but it gets the job done, and sometimes that’s good enough.
